interviews

I wanted to interview original people to find out what is originality. Rebecca (20 years old) has learning difficulties, she can't allocate properly her memories and she often forgets things. She couldn't define originality - it was too difficult for her, but she easily drew something original.
Mel (61 years old) is a full time daddy and part time chef at a pub. I think he is a very original man with interesting experience. I asked him twice about originality (interview and questionnaire) and twice I got slightly different answers. It was very difficult for Mel to define originality, especially because he tried to give an original answer.
At the end I interviewed myself as I thought it could be quite an original interview, It was also difficult for me to define originality and my answer turned out to be quite complicated, but hopefully understandable.
We are all different so originality means something different to all of us.

Rebecca / Barbara / Mel

Interview with Rebecca Katz on 27th April 2007
B: Do you know any original person?
R: Not really, but ...
Mummy and Daddy, are they original? I think they are. How about uncle Ian, is he original? I don't know.
B: Why do you think your Mummy and Daddy are original?
R: Because they do a lot for you, really. They go to work, and they live.
B: Are they different from other people?
R: Yes, sometimes.
B: Could you draw something original?
R: I have no idea how to draw something original.
(after a while)
R: I will draw a stick person.
B: Why is it a stick person?
R: Because if it wasn't a stick person, then what would it be?
A stick person can walk.
B: What does this stick person so every day?
R: Earns a job, earns a living, drives a car, does gym exercise, go shopping and looks at the list, has a career, could do, I don't know, maybe, ice hockey, football or anything, I don't know.
B: Do you think you are original?
R: Yesss.
B: What makes you original?
R: I go to school, I have a tea break, I like reading books. I am original because I am a person. I do felting; I love making my own supper with my friends. I am strong, sometimes. I mean in the gym, not anywhere else. Sometimes I am strong, but other times I am not really, depends really. I am happy at school. I like games. I am different from other people.
B: Why are you different?
R: Because I am not the same. I am different, because I don't have a walking stick. I used to have a wheelchair, because my foot was hurting. Because I am not Mum and Dad.
B: Why do you think you are different from other 20-years old people?
R: I don't know how to answer this question. I am younger than other 20 years old people. I play in a playground.
B: Do you have any hobbies?
R: Hobbies could have some hobbies. I don't know. My hobbies are: swimming, what is my favourite hobby in the world? Skipping! I don't know if I am good at skipping. Tennis! I like flowers... sometimes.
B: I know why you are original! Because you are afraid of policemen, why are you afraid of policemen?
R: That's a bit of a hard question.
B: Did you have any bad experience with policemen?
R: Yes. Because, no, my dad didn't get arrested, but a couple of weeks ago, someone got arrested, because she was drunk, it wasn't my dad, but it was near the place where my dad lives.
Once a policeman spotted me, because I was in the wrong shop. A policeman shouted "Where are you hiding Rebecca?" I said "I don't know." He was shouting a little bit, only a little bit. It was my fault. I was in the wrong shop. My mum never forgave me that day. It was a nightmare. I dream about policemen sometimes. I have bad dreams.
B: What is original?
R: Original means you have to be a person. Animals can be original. Plants can be original.
B: Do you think everything can be original?
R: Yes. Painting, pastels, crayons, pencils, paper, drawing, picture, lamp, door, pillows, paper chase, fruit board, mug, kitchen, money purse, keys, maps, cars, make up, glasses, stationery, monopoly, feelings, birthday card, great idea, cupboard, box, pill box, spoon, plate, screw driver, skipping rope, bin, green stuff, bottles, oven, toaster, game, books, CDs, videos, controls, Westlife, Pink, phone, bag, storage box, coat, olive oil, bread, TV, flowers, designs, scrapbooks etc.
